Sustainable Industrial Equipment & Lighting From Bangladesh: Certifications and Green Factories
Engineering exports reached USD 652.15 million in fiscal 2025-26 on EPB data. This guide covers motors, transformers, machine parts and industrial LED lighting, green factory evidence, BSTI, IE classes, CE, RoHS and WEEE checks, and supplier verification.
Short answer
Sustainable industrial equipment and lighting from Bangladesh covers motors, pumps, generators, machine parts and industrial LED lighting made for a large home market and a growing export trade. Engineering exports reached USD 652.15 million in fiscal 2025-26 on EPB data. Buyers source it sustainably by fixing a rated specification, requiring efficiency, substance, test and factory evidence for the exact model, and pricing repair, spares and end-of-life duties into the order.

Key takeaways
Engineering exports rose 21.77 percent to USD 652.15 million in fiscal 2025-26 on EPB data, and electrical product exports rose 23.82 percent to USD 206.19 million, the largest earner among engineering products.
Light engineering firms in Bangladesh produce 3,815 types of machinery, spares and accessories on Business Promotion Council estimates, in a sector an IFC study counted at 50,000 micro-enterprises and 10,000 small and medium enterprises.
The 226 LEED certified green factories reported for Bangladesh are garment factories. An industrial buyer must ask each supplier for its own site certificate and must never carry the garment count into a product claim.
For the European Union, three-phase motors from 0.75 kW to 1,000 kW must reach at least IE3, and motors from 75 kW to 200 kW must reach at least IE4 from 1 July 2023, under Regulation (EU) 2019/1781.
The BSTI mandatory certificate covers 239 products, including single-phase motors, UPS units and lead-acid traction batteries, and power transformers sit under the mandatory quality certificate.
If you buy sustainable industrial equipment and lighting in Bangladesh, you are buying two things at once: a rated machine or fitting that must run safely and efficiently in your plant for years, and a set of claims about how it was made, what it contains and what happens at the end of its life. The first is settled by testing. The second needs documents that name your exact model, rating and factory.
This guide covers the export data, the product families and production clusters, what green factories mean in this context, the certifications that decide market access, and how to verify a supplier. It gives no single typical price, minimum order quantity or lead time, because none exists across a category that runs from a single-phase motor to a power transformer.
Market overview with latest data
On Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data reported for fiscal year 2025-26, engineering exports overall rose 21.77 percent to USD 652.15 million, and exports of electrical products rose 23.82 percent to a record USD 206.19 million, up from USD 166.52 million a year earlier, passing bicycles at USD 151.04 million to become the largest earner among engineering products.1 Industrial equipment sits inside that engineering total, so read the electrical figure as a neighbour to this category, not as its size. See Bangladesh export data.
The export basket in the same report shows the industrial end of the range: power transformers, cables and insulated wires, switches, sockets and circuit breakers, and LED lighting, alongside consumer appliances and electronics.1 Build a sourcing programme family by family, because efficiency rules, material risks and end-of-life routes differ between a motor, a transformer and a luminaire.
Export growth comes as the European Union introduces new sustainability requirements through its Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and Digital Product Passport framework.1 The ESPR entered into force in July 2024, introducing requirements for Digital Product Passports and product durability, plus a ban on destroying certain unsold goods.1 It does not yet require every industrial product to carry a passport. Product-specific requirements come through delegated acts, and where they apply, manufacturers will need to provide information on materials, components, durability and repairability.1
The practical consequence is about data and components. Many Bangladeshi manufacturers source components and raw materials from China and Vietnam, which makes carbon footprint tracking harder to evidence.1 The Bangladesh Electrical Merchandise Manufacturers Association (Bemma) is preparing members through workshops on product origin, warranties, repairability and documentation, while the sector still lacks adequate testing infrastructure for Western-market standards.1 Ask early which laboratory will test your model.
The home market that built the base
Industrial equipment in Bangladesh grew up serving Bangladeshi industry first. The light engineering sector supports the industrial, agricultural and construction sectors by manufacturing spare parts, castings, moulds and dies, oil and gas pipeline fittings and light machinery.2 An International Finance Corporation study cited in the same report counted about 600,000 people in 50,000 micro-enterprises and 10,000 small and medium enterprises, in a sector described as a hub for nearly 800,000 jobs.2 The Business Promotion Council estimates that local light engineering industries produce 3,815 types of machinery, spares and accessories.2 That breadth is the opportunity and the risk: a cluster that can make almost any part can also quote for work outside its proven range. Your specification, sample testing and inspection plan separate the two.
Main products and production clusters
Fix the product family before you look for a factory. Each family uses different machinery, bought-in components and tests. A supplier strong in one family may assemble another from bought-in parts, which is workable when disclosed and a problem when hidden.
Motors, drives and rotating equipment. Single-phase and three-phase motors, pumps, fans, compressors and generators. Judge a motor on rated output, efficiency class and duty type, and judge the system on the drive that controls it. Energy use in service is the dominant environmental fact here, so a measured efficiency figure for your exact rating matters more than any factory claim.
Transformers, switchgear and distribution equipment. Power and distribution transformers, circuit breakers, control panels and metering. The export basket already includes power transformers.1 Judge this family on rated capacity, losses at stated load and test certificates for the individual unit, and ask whether faulty units are repaired or scrapped.
Machine parts, castings and light machinery. Spare parts for paper and cement mills, stone and brick crushers, automobile spares, train and rail support equipment, marine spare parts, cast-iron articles and carbon rods are among the engineering goods Bangladesh exports.2 Judge machined parts on material grade, tolerances and finish against a drawing, and keep the drawing revision in the purchase order.
Industrial and commercial lighting. LED high-bay fittings, street lights, floodlights and battens, plus drivers and housings. The United Kingdom tariff notes define light-emitting diode (LED) light sources in heading 8539 as LED modules and LED lamps, with lamps carrying a cap designed for easy installation or replacement in a luminaire.3 A module, a lamp and a luminaire are three different products with three different compliance files. Judge lighting on measured lumens, power factor and driver life, and ask whether the driver can be replaced. See trade lighting suppliers in Bangladesh.
Clusters. Light engineering production is concentrated where industry already sits, and the industries ministry decided to set up light engineering industrial parks in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Jashore, Bogura and Narsingdi.2 Record the producing site address and check the factory file against that address, not a head office.

The diagram lists the evidence to request for any family here.
Green factories: what the evidence shows and what it does not
According to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the total number of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified green factories in Bangladesh reached 226, with 89 Platinum and 123 Gold certified factories, and Bangladesh is home to 60 of the top 100 highest-rated LEED certified factories in the world.4 The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) rates factories on criteria including energy, water and waste management, with Platinum the highest rating.4
Three cautions follow. First, those 226 factories are garment factories. The figure proves Bangladeshi industry can operate factories to an audited green building standard at scale. It does not prove that any given machinery or lighting factory holds LEED certification, and you must never carry the garment count into an equipment supplier claim. Ask each supplier, in writing, for its own site certificate with its site address.
Second, a green building is not a green product. A factory inside a certified building can still ship a motor below its stated efficiency class or a luminaire with a short-life driver. You need both files: the site file, covering energy, water and waste at the plant, and the product file, covering rated performance, materials, substances, repairability and disposal.
Third, green investment has a financing channel you can ask about. Bangladesh Bank established a Tk 1,000 crore refinance scheme for green factory buildings and green industries, administered by its Sustainable Finance Department, to expand financing for green industries and promote sustainable production practices.5 A supplier financing a new line through this route has passed a bank process with documentation you can ask to see. Treat it as evidence about the site, never as a product certificate.
How to find and verify suppliers
Start from a rated specification, not from a supplier list. Write down the product family, the standard you are buying to, rated voltage, frequency and output, efficiency target, materials and substance limits, dimensions, protection rating, quantities per model, packing and the test evidence you require. See how to write an RFQ and finding suppliers in Bangladesh.
Build a shortlist from more than one route, then run the same verification sequence on every name:
Identity. Match the legal name, trade licence details and factory address across the supplier documents and its online presence.
Producing site. Record which plant makes your product and which stages are bought in. Machining, winding, casting and assembly are often split across workshops in this sector. An unexplained subcontracting chain is the problem, not subcontracting itself.
Test evidence for the exact model. Ask for test reports and certificates that name your model, rating and producing site: measured efficiency for a motor, losses for a transformer, measured output for a luminaire.
Substance and material file. Ask for the bill of materials plus supplier declarations for restricted substances covering coatings, compounds, plastics, solder, batteries and finishes.
Factory file. Request the building, energy, water and waste evidence set out above, and check its site address against step 2.
Export readiness. Ask which markets the supplier ships this family to. See the ERC verification guide and how supplier verification works on Exportain.
Samples under load. Test samples as your plant will: run the motor at your voltage and load, pressure-test the pump, and compare luminaire output with its rating. A sample that is only photographed has not been tested.
Repair and spares position. Ask which parts are replaceable, which spares are held and for how long. Record the answer in the purchase order.
Payment discipline. Confirm bank details through a second channel before paying, and treat any late change of bank details as a reason to pause and re-verify.
Warning signs include a quote far below every comparable offer, refusal to send samples or test reports, pressure to pay quickly to a personal account, reluctance to identify the producing factory, and certificates that name a different company, site, model or rating. Add one specific to this category: an efficiency or sustainability claim with no measurement behind it.
MOQ, pricing and lead times
Buyers routinely ask for one typical minimum order quantity (MOQ), one typical price and one typical lead time. None exists as a single figure for this category. Each is quoted per supplier, per model and per rating against a written specification. See minimum order quantity definition.
MOQ is driven by the smallest workable lot at each stage: steel and copper lots for motors and transformers, casting runs for machine parts, and component reels for lighting and drives. Sustainability requirements change the minimum. A higher efficiency class or a replaceable driver can turn a standard domestic model into a separate production run with its own minimum. Expect minimums per model and per rating, and ask which requirement is setting the minimum.
Pricing is built from material cost, conversion, testing, packing, inland transport and the export margin, then expressed on the agreed delivery term. Steel and copper prices move quotations, so quotes carry validity periods. Price the compliance file as part of the product: accredited testing, a notified body where your market requires one, spare parts and take-back contributions all cost money, and a quote that omits them is not cheaper, it is incomplete. Compare quotations only on an identical specification sheet.
For method only, consider this comparison. Example figures: two motor makers quote for the same 15 kW three-phase motor, one at USD 118 per unit EXW in IE3 and one at USD 126 per unit FOB in IE4 with a five-year spares commitment. Adding transport and handling of USD 5 per unit to the EXW quote gives a like-for-like FOB cost of USD 123 per unit, so the gap for the higher-efficiency version is USD 3 per unit, not USD 8. Use the landed cost for imports from Bangladesh method for the full calculation, and set the price against the energy the motor will use over its service life, not against the invoice alone.
Lead times cover material and component purchase, casting or winding, production, testing, packing and transport to port, on top of sample approval. Castings, imported bearings and drives are the usual long poles. Confirm the production slot, component position and laboratory booking in the purchase order.
Quality, certifications and compliance
Industrial goods fail in ways that cost production time: a motor that draws more current than its rating, or a breaker that does not trip at the stated fault level. A machine replaced twice carries roughly twice the footprint of a machine that lasts, so attach the specification to the purchase order and make the standard, the efficiency class and the substance limits part of the contract.
Specify measurable quality. For motors, define rated output, efficiency class and duty. For transformers, define capacity and losses at stated load. For switchgear, define rated current and breaking capacity. For lighting, define measured lumens, power factor and driver replacement method. For machined parts, define material grade and tolerances against a drawing revision. Numbers, a sealed sample and a test method can be inspected. Vague words cannot.
What does BSTI require in Bangladesh?
The Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) operates the national standardisation mark. BSTI added 37 products to the mandatory quality certificate, including uninterruptible power systems (UPS), lead-acid traction batteries and single-phase motors, taking the number of products covered to 239.6 BSTI had earlier added 43 products including the power transformer.7 If your product is on the list, ask for the licence for your factory and model. A BSTI licence does not replace your destination market approval.
Which certifications matter for the European Union?
CE marking answers whether the product may be sold. Many products require CE marking before they can be sold in the European Union, and electrical and electronic equipment and some kinds of machinery and pressure equipment are among the product groups covered.8 The manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that a product meets all applicable EU requirements and for affixing the CE marking, and where a product is made for you and sold under your own name or brand, you are treated as the manufacturer.8 There is no central EU body that issues permission to use the mark: the manufacturer identifies the requirements, decides whether self-assessment is allowed or a notified body is required, gathers evidence and signs an EU declaration of conformity.8 Treat any offer to supply a mark without that file as a warning sign.
Motor efficiency classes answer how the machine performs. Under Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/1781, from 1 July 2021 three-phase motors with a rated output from 0.75 kW to 1,000 kW must reach at least the IE3 efficiency level, and motors from 0.12 kW to below 0.75 kW must reach at least IE2.9 From 1 July 2023, single-phase motors at or above 0.12 kW and Ex eb increased safety motors must reach at least IE2, and three-phase motors from 75 kW to 200 kW that are not brake motors or other explosion-protected motors must reach at least IE4.9 Efficiency is expressed in International Energy efficiency classes, determined at rated output power and rated voltage, based on 50 Hz operation.9 State the IE class in your specification and require the test report for that combination.
Lighting labels answer a narrower question than buyers expect. There has been no obligation for luminaires to bear an EU energy label since 25 December 2019, because the luminaire label was discontinued under Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/2015.10 A luminaire that meets the definition of a light source under that regulation must still bear an energy label.10 Buy the light source file and the luminaire photometric file separately: output, glare and driver life for the finished fitting come from test reports you specify yourself.
RoHS answers what the product may contain. The Restriction of Hazardous Substances regime restricts certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, aiming to minimize the amount ending up in landfill and in recycling processes.11 The restricted substances named in the United Kingdom government summary include lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium, and the flame retardants polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and the regime places obligations on each operator placing equipment on the market for the first time, including manufacturers, importers and distributors.11 In practice this is a supply-chain file, not a single test: declarations from component suppliers, supported by testing where the risk justifies it.
WEEE answers what happens at the end of life. Directive 2012/19/EU on waste electrical and electronic equipment aims to protect the environment and human health by preventing waste equipment, promoting reuse and recycling, and supporting the efficient use of resources.12 Member States must ensure a minimum annual collection rate, 45 percent from 2016 and 65 percent from 2019, producers must finance the cost of collection, treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal, and households and distributors must be able to return waste equipment free of charge.12 For an EU importer, these duties usually land on you or your importer. Price them at the quotation stage, and agree in the contract who holds take-back duties for large installed units.
Ecodesign and the ESPR answer how the product performs and how long it lasts. The European Commission adopted its 2025-2030 working plan for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation and the Energy Labelling Regulation in April 2025, aiming to promote sustainable, repairable, circular and energy efficient products, and the plan will introduce horizontal measures on product repairability, including a repairability score, as well as requirements on the recyclability of electrical and electronic equipment.13 Design choices you make now, such as standard bearings and a replaceable driver, are the cheapest way to stay inside those rules.
Test at the right stages. Approve a pre-production sample in the correct rating, require routine test records, then inspect before shipment against the approved sample. ISO 2859-1:2026 defines a system of acceptance sampling plans for inspection by attributes, indexed by acceptance quality limit (AQL), for lot-by-lot inspection, and the AQL is the maximum average percentage of defective items considered acceptable during random sampling.14 See AQL acceptance quality limit and pre-shipment inspection. Add functional testing on packed units before the carton is sealed.
Shipping, Incoterms and duties
Industrial goods ship in mixed forms: crated machinery and palletised cartons by sea, transformer tanks as project cargo, and samples by air. Packing is part of the sustainability decision. Machined faces must be protected against corrosion, motors sealed against moisture, and cartons marked with rating information that matches the documents.
Choose the delivery term deliberately. The Incoterms rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce are eleven three-letter trade terms used in contracts for the sale and purchase of goods, clarifying the tasks, costs and risks involved in delivering goods from sellers to buyers.15 Incoterms 2020 entered into force on 1 January 2020.15 Under EXW, you arrange almost everything from the factory gate. Under FOB, the supplier delivers the goods on board at the named Bangladeshi port. Under CIF, the supplier pays freight and minimum insurance to your destination port, while risk passes at loading. Read Incoterms for shipments from Bangladesh and EXW price meaning.
Duties must be checked, not assumed. Duty depends on the HS classification, your destination tariff and any preferential scheme that applies to Bangladesh at the time of import. Classify first. Within subheading 8501 51, other AC motors, multi-phase, of an output not exceeding 750 W, the United Kingdom Integrated Online Tariff lists a third-country duty of 0.00 percent for the lines shown in that subheading, including the general Other line.3 Confirm the current duty for your exact line before you calculate landed cost. Read the Harmonized System tariff code explainer.
Product family | Indicative heading | What decides the exact line |
|---|---|---|
Electric motors and generators | 8501 | AC or DC, output, and single-phase or multi-phase |
Transformers and converters | 8504 | Power handling capacity and function |
LED lamps and modules | 8539 | Whether the item is a capped lamp or a module without a cap |
Read the table as indicative only.
Documents decide whether goods move. Bangladesh Customs requires an export declaration, known as a Bill of Export or Shipping Bill, to be submitted and approved before goods are loaded for export, with documents that include the export letter of credit or, where there is none, the export contract or purchase order, a commercial invoice, a packing list, an EXP form certified by an authorised dealer bank, a certificate of origin issued by the EPB or a chamber of commerce, a VAT registration certificate and a taxpayer identification number.16 Check names, HS codes, ratings and quantities across every document as soon as drafts arrive.
Step-by-step buying process
Define the range. Fix product families, rated specifications, efficiency classes, target standards, substance limits and destination markets.
Research the market. Check current EPB data for your family and the cluster map in this guide.
Classify each product. Confirm the heading, then the full national code and duty line in your tariff.
Build the evidence list. List the product file and factory file you will require, including IE class evidence for motors.
Shortlist and check suppliers. Run the identity, producing-site, test-evidence and registration checks in this guide.
Request comparable quotations. Send the identical specification sheet to each supplier, requiring term, currency, validity, MOQ and lead time.
Sample and test. Approve physical samples in your rating, run functional tests under load, and seal a counter-sample.
Agree the contract. Issue a purchase order with the specification, efficiency class, substance limits, document list, inspection rights, spares commitment, payment terms and delivery term.
Control production. Confirm the production slot, component position and laboratory booking, and resolve any substitution request in writing, because a substituted component can void a test report.
Inspect before shipment. Commission an independent inspection against the sealed sample, and release shipment only on a pass or an agreed corrective action.
Ship, clear and review. Check document drafts early, clear customs with your broker, then review the delivered goods in service.

FAQs
Is Bangladesh a good place to source industrial equipment and lighting?
It can be, when the supplier, the specification and the evidence are right. Engineering exports rose 21.77 percent to USD 652.15 million in fiscal 2025-26 on EPB data,1 and light engineering firms produce 3,815 types of machinery, spares and accessories on Business Promotion Council estimates.2 None of that certifies your order. It shows the category is active enough to justify the verification work in this guide.
What is the typical MOQ?
There is no single typical MOQ for this category. Minimums are set by material lots, casting runs and component lots, and sustainability requirements such as a higher efficiency class can turn a standard model into a separate run with its own minimum. Ask each supplier to state its MOQ per model and per rating against your specification.
How long is the lead time?
Lead time is product- and component-specific. It covers material and component purchase, production, testing, packing and transport to the port, after sample approval. Castings, imported bearings and drives are the usual constraint.
Which certifications matter?
It depends on your market and product. In Bangladesh, check BSTI first: the mandatory certificate covers 239 products including UPS units, lead-acid traction batteries and single-phase motors,6 and power transformers.7 For the European Union, motors must meet the IE efficiency levels in Regulation (EU) 2019/1781 for their output band,9 and electrical and electronic equipment and some machinery sit among the product groups covered by CE marking laws, with the manufacturer, including a business that sells a product under its own brand, carrying the compliance duty.8 Add the substance file,11 the end-of-life duties,12 and the lighting label position.10 For factory claims, ask for the site certificate itself rather than relying on national green factory counts, which are reported for garment factories.4
