Short answer

To import hotel linen from Bangladesh to Germany, specify a room set item by item, set par stock and a commercial laundry standard, check the supplier in three layers, approve a pre-production sample after laundry testing, label in German under EU fiber rules, classify each item under heading 6302, confirm the EBA preference and statement on origin with your broker, and budget 19 percent import VAT at Hamburg.

Key takeaways

  • Everything But Arms grants full duty-free access for all goods except arms and ammunition from the world's least developed countries, continuing indefinitely under the updated GSP, subject to origin rules; no confirmed 6302 duty rate is stated in this guide, so confirm every line with a broker.

  • Hotel linen sits in the indicative heading 6302: bed linen, table linen and terry towelling split by construction, print and fiber; the broker must confirm the full EU code for each item on the official tariff.

  • Multi-fiber products must be labelled with the name and percentage by weight of all constituent fibers in descending order, in the official language of the member state, which means German fiber wording for Germany; ISO 3758:2023 excludes industrial laundering, so agree the commercial laundry treatment separately.

  • OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 places bed linen and towels in Product Class II and table linen in Product Class IV, and a certificate is valid for 12 months; check the certificate number, class, articles covered and expiry date for the exact items ordered.

  • Import VAT in Germany is 19 percent on the customs value plus customs duty, separate from duty, and a German importer needs an EORI number; the worked example lands one room set at EUR 67.10 excluding VAT and EUR 78.50 cash at import on example figures.

A German hotel does not buy linen the way a retailer buys a sheet set. It buys a room set that must survive commercial laundering, match across batches, and be replaced piece by piece without a visible change in white, size, or hand feel. This checklist explains how to import hotel linen from Bangladesh to Germany: decide the room set and the laundry standard first, then the supplier, the sample, and the Hamburg entry.

Under the updated Generalised Scheme of Preferences, the Everything But Arms initiative grants full duty-free access for all goods except arms and ammunition from the world's least developed countries, and it will continue indefinitely.1 That preference is conditional on origin rules and proof of origin. Import VAT is separate from duty: the basis for assessment of import VAT is the customs value plus customs duty, and the import VAT rate is currently 19 percent.2

Build the room-set specification before you ask for prices

Start with one room type. A room set is the pieces that must work together in one room: flat sheet, fitted sheet, pillowcases, duvet cover, bath towel, hand towel, and table linen where used. Write each piece on its own line, with its own size, fiber, and tariff line.

Classification splits first by construction and print, then by fiber. The Harmonized System groups bed linen, table linen, toilet linen, and kitchen linen under heading 6302, with bed linen subheadings for knitted or crocheted pieces and for printed and unprinted pieces by fiber, table linen in its own subheadings, and terry towelling in 6302.60.3 The broker must confirm the full EU code for each piece, and every heading in this guide is indicative until verified on the official tariff.

Name the fiber composition for each piece in the words you want on the label, with percentages by weight in descending order. Under Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011, a multi-fiber textile product shall be labelled or marked with the name and percentage by weight of all constituent fibers in descending order.4 Agree that wording at specification stage, not at packing stage. Where the hotel wants a woven or embroidered mark, name the mark, its position, and its size on the same line as the piece.

State the finished sizes in centimeters, measured after washing, for every piece. Size names do not travel safely between markets, and a German hotel bed needs pocket depth stated at each corner for the fitted sheet, not a size name alone. Give the duvet cover its length, width, and closure type, the pillowcase its dimensions and opening style, and each towel its length and width. Agree the tolerance for finished dimensions in writing, and measure the pre-production sample against that tolerance.

Par stock, sizes and commercial laundry durability

Par stock is the total stock of each item held for a property, expressed as a multiple of the pieces in use in the rooms, covering pieces in the laundry, in transit, and in store. No single multiple suits every property. Set it property by property, item by item, from laundry turnaround and peak occupancy, and write it into the order.

Commercial laundry durability is tested, not asserted. Wash the sample repeatedly through the program the property laundry actually runs, recording temperature, detergent, drying method, and cycle count. Then check size after washing, fitted-sheet fit, and white match across the room set under the same light.

Care labelling needs a separate agreement, because the standard care symbols do not cover industrial laundering. ISO 3758:2023 establishes a system of graphic symbols for the most severe treatments that do not cause irreversible damage, covering domestic washing, bleaching, drying, and ironing, but excluding industrial laundering.5 Symbols for industrial laundering are in ISO 30023.5 Agree the laundry treatment with the laundry operator in writing.

Harmful-substances certification follows the same logic: check the certificate against the exact articles ordered. Under OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, the criteria depend above all on intended use, and the more direct the skin contact, the stricter the requirements.6 Bed linen and towels fall in Product Class II, while table linen falls in Product Class IV.6 A STANDARD 100 certificate is valid for 12 months.6 A certificate for towels does not cover a duvet cover. See the hotel linen quality control checklist.

Import hotel linen from Bangladesh to Germany: find and check suppliers

Bangladesh has an established home textile base. In 2024-25, Bangladesh Bank recorded home textile export receipts of USD 453.8 million, up 3.2 percent on the previous year, and terry towel receipts of USD 18.7 million, up 14.0 percent.7 Those figures describe receipts through the banking channel, not production capacity, and they do not rank suppliers. Shortlist on evidence: mills whose current range already includes bed, bath, and table linen in the fibers the room set needs, and who already ship to Germany or another EU member state.

Send every candidate the identical specification and ask for the same reply format: fabric assumed, finished sizes, towel weights, price inclusions, validity, and the minimum per item and color. Ask how each handles the German-facing parts: German fiber wording, care labelling, the statement on origin, and the test reports the property names. Browse suppliers on Exportain and read how to import from Bangladesh first.

How should a German hotel buyer check a supplier before paying?

Check in three layers before payment. First, company documents: trade license, export registration, and association membership, checked so name, address, and bank account agree. Second, capability: capacity by item group, weaving route, fabric width, terry loom capacity, dyeing route, and recent linen from current production. Third, payment discipline: pay only the company account named in the documents, and verify any bank detail change through a separate channel.

On Exportain, supplier profiles carry document and photo review badges where the checks have been completed. A badge records a review of documents and photos, not a factory inspection or a guarantee, and Exportain is not a party to the goods contract. Read how to buy to see how the platform works. For a first order, add a video or in-person check of production with the room-set items being made.

Samples, inspection and laundry testing

Work in stages, approving in writing at each stage. A development sample shows whether the mill can construct each item and complete a full room set. A pre-production sample, in the actual production fabric and finish, is the sample you approve for bulk. Wash samples through the agreed commercial program, then measure sizes, check shrinkage and fit, and for towels check absorbency, linting, and pile. Keep one sealed counter-sample of each item.

Agree the inspection method and defect limits before production. ISO 2859-1:2026 defines a system of acceptance sampling plans indexed by acceptance quality limit (AQL), the maximum average percentage of defective items considered acceptable during random sampling, used to set sample sizes and acceptance thresholds.8 Set your AQL level and defect limits in the purchase order, and inspect in stages: inline during sewing, and a final random inspection on packed goods, drawn across items, sizes, colors, and cartons. Read the acceptance quality limit guide and the pre-shipment inspection guide.

There is no single typical minimum. It is set per item and usually per color, because fabric is woven, bleached, or dyed in batches. Ask how it splits by item, size, color, and logo treatment, and whether it is counted in pieces, sets, dozens, or cartons. Work it from the par stock calculation for each property.

Fabric is usually the largest cost element, followed by cutting and sewing, bleaching or dyeing, finishing, hemming, logo work, testing, packing, and margin. Compare quotes only on the same item list, sizes, fabric, towel weights, delivery term, and packing, with exclusions stated. A quote that excludes the German label set or required laundry testing is incomplete, not cheaper.

Labels, fiber names and care symbols for Germany

Settle the label set at sampling stage, with the German wording checked by a reader who works in German. Check the finished label before bulk sewing, and again after the laundry test: a label that fades cannot sort pieces in service.

Fiber labelling is set by EU law. A multi-fiber textile product shall be labelled or marked with the name and percentage by weight of all constituent fibers in descending order.4 Fiber composition descriptions must be easily legible, visible, and clear, and clearly visible to the consumer before purchase, including online purchases.9 Labelling shall be in the official language of the member state where the products are made available, unless that member state provides otherwise.9 For Germany, that means German fiber wording on the label and in the online listing. Keep size wording in centimeters.

Care symbols follow ISO 3758:2023, with industrial laundering symbols in ISO 30023.5 Set each symbol from test results on the actual fabric, and add the laundry sorting mark: item type, size, and any property mark, readable after the wash check.

Classification, EBA preference and the Hamburg entry

Duty follows the classification of each item in the EU tariff, not the supplier product name. The central heading is 6302, and the EU adds further digits in the Combined Nomenclature and TARIC.3 Confirm the full EU code for each item in writing with your broker. Every heading here is indicative: verify it on the official tariff. Read the HS code guide for hotel linen.

What import duty applies in Germany?

No confirmed duty rate is stated here for any 6302 line, because no official TARIC schedule line for 6302 was opened for this guide. Mark every duty line as confirm with broker, and ask for the full TARIC code, the most-favored-nation rate on the entry date, and the preference rate if origin is accepted. Price at both rates until the broker confirms.

The preference is the Everything But Arms arrangement, which grants full duty-free access for all goods except arms and ammunition from the world's least developed countries, continuing indefinitely under the updated GSP.1 The Financial Express report on the 25th anniversary event records the same arrangement as duty-free and quota-free access for all products except arms and ammunition.10 A preference is claimed shipment by shipment. Exporters can self-declare origin with a statement on origin from a REX-registered exporter, or any exporter for consignments up to 6,000 euro, valid for 12 months.11 Ask for the REX number and a sample statement before the first shipment.

Import VAT, EORI number and documents

Import VAT is separate from duty, and it remains payable even where duty falls away under a preference. German customs states that where a tariff concession takes the form of an exemption from customs duty, only the import VAT and any applicable excise duty must be paid.2 Budget import VAT at 19 percent, on the basis of the customs value plus customs duty, and confirm the VAT base, the recovery position, and the cash timing with your tax adviser or broker before you price.2

A German importer needs an EORI number. German customs states it is an operator identification number valid throughout the EU that replaces the German customs number, and a prerequisite for customs clearance since 1 July 2009.12 Apply before the first shipment, and ask your broker to walk through one entry in advance. The standard import set is the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and proof of origin where a preference is claimed, with each item on its own invoice line.

Delivery terms, Hamburg routing and timing

Under Incoterms 2020, the delivery term settles delivery, risk, cost, and customs obligations, and in all rules except DDP the buyer carries out import formalities. Name the rule, version, and named place in the contract, for example FCA Chattogram, Incoterms 2020. Under FCA, the seller delivers and transfers risk at the agreed location once the goods reach the carrier, and FCA suits any mode of transport, including multimodal shipments.13 Under FOB, risk passes once the goods are loaded onto the vessel, and FOB is only for maritime or inland waterway transport.13 A container is handed to the carrier before loading, so FCA matches containerized hotel linen.13 Read the Incoterms guide for shipments from Bangladesh before you choose.

Agree the port, the inland leg, and the delivery address in one document with the forwarder, and confirm carton dimensions and weight, because hotel linen is light for its size and carton volume can limit a shipment before weight does.

How long does shipping take from Bangladesh to Germany?

There is no single typical transit time, and this guide states none. Sea freight takes weeks rather than days, varying by schedule, routing, transshipment, and season. Work backward from the opening or replenishment date, add clearance and delivery, and keep production time separate. Confirm the shipment date only after sample approval, with a buffer for a second sample round and Hamburg clearance.

Worked landed cost for one room set

A landed cost is the full cost of one room set, cleared and delivered to the property warehouse, excluding any VAT recovery. Every number below is an example figure only, not a quote. Example figures: 1,000 room sets (one flat sheet, one fitted sheet, two pillowcases, one duvet cover, two bath towels, two hand towels), CIF Hamburg, preference accepted.

Cost element

Example figures (per room set)

CIF value, Hamburg

EUR 60.00

Duty at the EBA preference rate, accepted

EUR 0.00

Port, clearance and broker fees, Hamburg

EUR 3.20

Inland delivery to the property warehouse

EUR 2.80

Inspection and laundry testing, allocated per set

EUR 1.10

Total landed cost, excluding VAT

EUR 67.10

VAT is shown separately: the basis is the customs value plus customs duty, at 19 percent.2 On the example figures, the VAT base is EUR 60.00 and import VAT is EUR 11.40 per set. The total cash cost at import is EUR 78.50 per set before any VAT recovery. If the preference is refused, add duty at the broker-confirmed rate and recalculate VAT. Work the full method in the landed cost guide.

The step-by-step checklist, in order

  1. Write the room-set specification: every item on its own line, with fiber composition and percentages, finished sizes in centimeters after washing, pocket depth, weave, towel weights, mark treatment, and label set.

  2. Set the par stock multiple per property and per item from laundry turnaround and peak occupancy, and agree the shade standard for repeat orders.

  3. Agree the commercial laundry program, the wash count for sample testing, and the size-after-wash tolerances with the laundry operator.

  4. Classify every item from heading 6302 and confirm each full EU code and duty line with your broker, marking any unopened schedule line as confirm with broker.

  5. Confirm the EBA origin route with the supplier: REX number, sample statement on origin, and the origin evidence for the exact shipment.

  6. Confirm the VAT position with your broker and tax adviser: 19 percent rate, VAT base, recovery, and cash timing.

  7. Shortlist mills whose range includes bed, bath, and table linen, and request quotes on the identical room-set specification.

  8. Verify the supplier in three layers: documents, capability, and payment discipline, before any payment.

  9. Order samples in stages, wash them through the agreed commercial program, and approve a pre-production sample of each item, keeping a sealed counter-sample.

  10. Confirm the order in writing: purchase order, delivery and payment terms, inspection plan, AQL level, labelling, and packing, then ship, clear customs with the confirmed codes, and reconcile the actual landed cost.

What is the typical MOQ for hotel linen from Bangladesh?

There is no single typical minimum. The minimum is set per item and usually per color, because sheeting and terry fabric are woven, bleached, or dyed in batches. Ask how it splits by item, size, color, and logo treatment, and whether it is counted in pieces, sets, dozens, or cartons. Set the order quantity from the par stock calculation for each property.

How long does shipping take?

Production time and transit time are separate. Sea freight from Chattogram to Hamburg takes weeks rather than days, varying by schedule, routing, transshipment, and season. Plan from the forwarder current sailing schedule, confirm the shipment date only after sample approval, and add clearance, inland delivery, and a buffer for a second sample round.

What import duty applies?

Confirm every duty line with your broker before you price or ship. The indicative heading is 6302, with bed linen, table linen, and terry towelling in the subheadings set out above.3 No confirmed duty rate is stated in this guide for any 6302 line. The Everything But Arms arrangement grants full duty-free access for all goods except arms and ammunition from the world's least developed countries, subject to origin rules and a statement on origin.1 If the origin evidence fails, the most-favored-nation rate confirmed by your broker applies, so work the landed cost at both rates.

How do I verify a supplier?

Check company documents first, so that the name, address, and bank account agree across the trade license, export registration, and invoices. Then check capability: weaving and dyeing route, capacity by item group, and finished bed, bath, and table linen from current production, with the German label artwork and origin documents checked. Keep payments to the company account named in the documents, verify any bank detail change through a separate channel, and treat any profile badge as a document and photo review, not a factory inspection or a guarantee.
