What Does a DPU Price Include? Cost Breakdown With a Real Example
Definition
Under DPU (Delivered at Place Unloaded), Incoterms 2020, the seller pays carriage to the named place, bears transit risk until the goods are unloaded there, and completes export clearance. The DPU price covers the goods, export packing and clearance, carriage to the named place and unloading. The buyer pays import clearance, duty and taxes, and onward transport, and must agree insurance separately, because DPU imposes no insurance obligation on either side.

Key takeaways
Under DPU the seller delivers the goods unloaded at the named place, bears carriage and unloading cost and risk to that point, and completes export clearance.
A DPU price covers the goods, export packing and clearance, carriage to the named place and unloading, but not import clearance, duty and taxes, insurance, or onward transport.
The unloading point must be named as a bay, dock or yard area, not only as a city or warehouse address, because the named point fixes where the seller cost and risk end.
DPU imposes no insurance obligation on either side, so any agreed cover must be shown as its own line, for the leg it covers.
Four rules, FAS, FOB, CFR and CIF, are for sea and inland waterway transport only; DPU is one of the seven any-mode rules, and its price must not be ranked against a port-based CIF headline price.
Stand at the unloading bay and read a DPU quotation backwards. The price is finished only when the goods are off the arriving vehicle and placed at your disposal at the named place. Every line before that moment belongs inside the price.
This guide explains dpu price meaning for buyers in the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union and the United Arab Emirates reading DPU quotations from Bangladeshi suppliers.
Quick answer
DPU stands for Delivered at Place Unloaded. Under DPU, Incoterms 2020, the seller delivers the goods unloaded at the named place, bears carriage and unloading cost and risk to that point, and completes export clearance. The DPU price meaning is a goods-plus-carriage-plus-unloading price: it covers goods, export packing and clearance, carriage and unloading, but not import clearance, duty, insurance, or onward transport.1 2
The unloading point sets the boundary of the price
DPU is one of the eleven Incoterms 2020 rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). It replaced DAT (Delivered at Terminal): the named place need not be a terminal, but can be any agreed place.1 3
The boundary is the unloading act itself. The seller undertakes to deliver the goods and transfer the risk of loss or damage at the designated place and point, including unloading the goods from the arriving means of transport and making them available to the buyer.1 That act separates DPU from DAP. Under DAP, the seller delivers the goods ready for unloading, and the cost of unloading may or may not be included in the transportation contract.1 Under DPU, unloading is inside the seller's obligation. The DAP price guide draws the same boundary one step earlier.
Name the point, not only the place: a warehouse address alone does not say which bay the vehicle must reach. The seller should assess whether it can safely unload there; if it cannot, DAP fits better.1 Write the full address, bay and rule together: "DPU (named place and unloading point), Incoterms 2020".
Reading the price backwards: from the bay to the factory
Read the quotation in reverse, starting where the seller's work ends:
Unloading. Labor to open and empty the container, a forklift and pallet jack, and waiting time while the bay is cleared.2 Ask who unloads and whether waiting time is inside the line.
Destination handling. Terminal handling and release charges may sit inside the carriage contract or be billed on arrival. The seller must pay transport costs resulting from the contract of carriage, and the unloading costs.2 Ask which charges the carriage figure covers.
Carriage. The seller must arrange and bear the cost of carriage to the named place, and to the agreed point within it.2 If the exact point is not specified, the seller can select the cheapest point, such as a cargo terminal.2
Export clearance and the goods. The seller must carry out all export and transit clearance formalities at its own risk and cost.2 For a shipment from Bangladesh, goods must not be loaded for export unless a Bill of Export (Shipping Bill) has been submitted to Customs and approved.4

Who pays for each line: the unloading-inclusive split
Incoterms 2020 collects all costs for a rule in article A9/B9, so the full cost list for DPU sits in one place.3
Cost line | In a DPU price? | Who pays |
|---|---|---|
Goods, including export packing | Yes | Seller |
Checking, weighing and counting | Yes | Seller |
Export clearance and transit clearance | Yes | Seller |
Loading, carriage and transport security | Yes | Seller |
Destination terminal charges in the carriage contract | Yes, if in the contract | Seller |
Unloading at the named place and point | Yes | Seller |
Proof of delivery | Yes | Seller |
Cargo insurance | No obligation on either side | Whoever buys it, priced separately |
Import clearance, duties and taxes | No | Buyer |
Onward transport beyond the named place | No | Buyer |
The seller must pay all costs until delivery, except costs the buyer must pay under the buyer's cost article; the only DAP-to-DPU difference is that the seller pays for unloading.2 The buyer must pay import clearance costs, duties and taxes, and all costs from delivery onward.2
Insurance sits outside the price on both sides: the seller has no obligation to insure the goods for the buyer, and the buyer has none to the seller.2 Only CIF and CIP oblige the seller to buy insurance for the buyer.3
The DPU price meaning, applied: tote bags to Leeds
Example figures only, for one shipment of cotton canvas tote bags from Chattogram to a warehouse in Leeds, quoted DPU the warehouse, unloading at Bay 3, Incoterms 2020. They are not a quotation or a market price. The buyer-side lines follow the landed cost guide.5
Element of the DPU price | Example figure (USD) |
|---|---|
Goods, including export packing | 9,450 |
Export clearance and documents | 210 |
Carriage, Chattogram to the Leeds warehouse | 1,870 |
Unloading at Bay 3, labor and forklift hire | 185 |
DPU price to the warehouse, unloaded at Bay 3 | 11,715 |
Buyer-side cost | Example figure (USD) |
|---|---|
Import clearance and broker | 195 |
Duty and taxes, example lump sum | 540 |
Onward transport beyond the warehouse | 120 |
Buyer-side total | 855 |
Landed total at the warehouse | 12,570 |
Arithmetic: 9,450 + 210 + 1,870 + 185 = 11,715; 195 + 540 + 120 = 855; 11,715 + 855 = 12,570. No duty rate is stated: the broker must confirm it from classification and the destination tariff.5
DPU beside DAP, DDP and CIF: one line changes the total
Four rules, FAS, FOB, CFR and CIF, are for sea and inland waterway transport only. Seven rules, including CPT, DAP, DPU and DDP, work for any mode.6 See the Incoterms guide for all eleven rules.
Under DAP, the seller also pays carriage and bears transit risk to arrival, but delivery happens before unloading, and the buyer unloads at its own cost and risk.1 The DAP-to-DPU difference should be, in substance, the unloading line.
Under DDP, the seller also clears the goods for import and pays import duty and taxes.6 A DPU price is therefore not duty-paid, and any folded-in import handling should be priced separately.
Under CIF, the seller delivers on board at the port of shipment, pays freight and minimum insurance to the destination port, and risk passes on board at origin.7 A CIF price includes only goods, insurance and freight, ending at the destination port.7
Mistakes that price the unloading twice, or not at all
Reading carriage to the port as carriage to the bay. A freight figure ending at the terminal still needs the inland leg and unloading. Confirm the end point in writing.2
Accepting a city as the named point. "DPU Leeds" does not name Bay 3.2
Paying handling twice. The same terminal charge in the contract and billed on arrival is charged twice.2 5
Assuming the seller can unload at the named point. Heavy packing may need equipment the seller lacks at that site. If it cannot safely unload, DAP fits better.1
Treating the price as duty-paid. Import clearance, duty and taxes stay with the buyer.2 8
Assuming insurance is included. DPU imposes no insurance obligation on either party.2
Leaving waiting and storage unagreed. If clearance delays unloading, the vehicle waits. Agree who pays before shipment.
Comparing with a CIF or FOB headline. CIF ends at the port; FOB ends on board at origin. Price every quotation to the same unloaded point.6 7
What is DPU?
DPU stands for Delivered at Place Unloaded. It is one of the eleven Incoterms 2020 rules, published by the ICC, and it replaced DAT so the named place can be any place, not only a terminal.1 3 The seller delivers unloaded and completes export clearance; the buyer completes import clearance, pays duty and taxes, and arranges onward transport.1 2
How does DPU work in practice?
The seller packs, clears export, contracts carriage, and unloads at the agreed point, giving notice to collect the goods.1 2 The buyer prepares import clearance in transit and moves the goods onward after delivery.1 8
Is DPU used for shipments from Bangladesh?
Yes, where the seller arranges carriage to the named place and unloading point and the buyer handles import clearance at destination. No separate Bangladesh rule changes the split: export clearance, including the approved Bill of Export before loading, stays with the seller, and import clearance and duty stay with the buyer.4
What are common mistakes with DPU?
Reading a port figure as a bay price, accepting a city name as the point, paying handling twice, assuming the seller can unload any packing, treating the price as duty-paid, assuming insurance, leaving waiting unagreed, and ranking against CIF or FOB. Each comes from reading the headline without fixing the unloading point first.
