DPU for Small Importers: Is It the Right Incoterm for Your First Order?
A first order on DPU trades carriage control for seller unloading, and keeps import clearance, duty and onward transport with the buyer. This guide tests order size, unloading, cost visibility and broker readiness, and gives a go, no-go or not-yet answer before you sign.
Short answer
DPU suits a small first-time importer who can clear import customs and pay duty, and whose seller can unload safely at a precisely named place. The seller pays carriage and bears cost and risk through unloading, and the buyer then clears import, pays duty and taxes, and moves the goods onward. DPU imposes no insurance duty, so agree cover in writing before shipment, and say not yet if no broker or duty estimate is ready.

Key takeaways
Under DPU the seller delivers unloaded at a named place, and cost and risk pass only after unloading; the buyer then clears import customs, pays duty and taxes, and moves the goods onward.
DPU is the only Incoterms 2020 rule that requires the seller to unload, it applies to any mode of transport, and the sea-only rules are four: FAS, FOB, CFR and CIF.
DPU imposes no insurance duty on either side, so agree who arranges cover, for which leg and at what insured value, in writing before shipment.
Say yes only when the seller can unload safely, a broker is appointed, duty funds are set aside, the place is named to the bay or gate, and insurance is agreed.
Compare quotations only to the same unloaded point: a DPU price excludes import duty and taxes and onward transport, and DPU sets no typical cost or timeline.
A first order tests everything at once: a new supplier, a new route, and costs you have not paid before. Under DPU, Delivered at Place Unloaded, the seller delivers the goods to a named place, unloads them from the arriving means of transport, and makes them available to you, and risk and cost pass at that point.1 You then take delivery, complete import formalities, pay duty and taxes, and arrange onward transport.1 DPU removes carriage and unloading from your first order, and it leaves import clearance, duty, and onward movement with you.
The first-order question, stated in one sentence
DPU is one of the 11 Incoterms 2020 rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), renamed from DAT, Delivered at Terminal, so the destination can be any place, not just a terminal.2 The sole difference from DAP is unloading: under DAP the seller does not unload, and under DPU the seller does.2 DPU can be used for any mode of transport, including multimodal shipments.1
The sea and inland waterway only rules are four: FAS, FOB, CFR, and CIF. CPT is an any-mode rule, and DPU is an any-mode rule.3 DPU imposes no insurance obligation on either party, so agree who arranges cover, for which leg, and at what insured value, in writing before shipment.4 5 Only CIF and CIP oblige the seller to buy insurance for the buyer.3
Say yes, say no, or say not yet
Say yes when the seller can unload safely at the exact place, you have import help ready, the place is named to the bay or gate, and insurance is agreed in writing. A buyer in Bristol, in the United Kingdom, ordering a first small load of bamboo serving boards for a storage unit with a loading bay, no forklift, and a broker already appointed, fits this answer. The seller's carrier unloads the pallets, and the buyer takes delivery, clears import, and moves the boards onward.
Say no when you need control of the carrier, the route, or the unloading crew, or when you want the seller to clear import and pay duty. A buyer in Texas who holds its own forwarder rates and runs a warehouse crew gives up that control under DPU, because the seller arranges and pays for carriage to the named place.1 A buyer who cannot clear import at all should test DDP first, because DDP is the rule where the seller clears import customs and pays import duty.3
Say not yet when the broker is not appointed, no duty estimate exists, the named place is only a city, or insurance is undecided. Fix those points before signing: appoint the broker, get the duty and tax estimate on the exact goods, name the place in full, and write the insurance line into the contract. Do not sign first and fix later, while unloaded goods wait.4
Five checks that settle a first DPU order
Run the checks in order. A failed check means fixing the gap, pricing it, or changing the rule before signing.
Check | Pass | If it fails |
|---|---|---|
1. Receiving effort | Clearance is staffed for a small order, with a broker, a receiving slot, and duty funds set aside | Do not sign until the broker and funds are in place |
2. Control or convenience | You accept seller-chosen carriage and route for delivery unloaded | Use FCA, where you nominate the carrier |
3. Cost visibility | The DPU price is read to the unloaded point only, with duty and onward transport priced separately | Ask for the breakdown and broker estimate first |
4. Unloading-point risk | The seller can unload safely at the exact place, with equipment, access, and a time slot | Name a place the seller can serve, or use DAP |
5. Broker readiness | Clearance can start on arrival, with documents and classification prepared | Book the broker before the goods move |
A trial order still needs registration, classification, a broker instruction, and a receiving appointment. The seller should assess whether unloading can be ensured, and choose DAP if it cannot.1 The exact delivery point must be clearly defined in the contract, because DPU does not automatically mean the buyer's facility.6 The buyer bears import formalities at its own risk and expense, and if the seller does not provide the correct documents, the buyer may have to cover the resulting expenses.1 4
DPU beside DAP and DDP on a first order
The three D rules all carry seller risk to a named place in the buyer's country, and they differ at the handover.5
Point | DPU | DAP | DDP |
|---|---|---|---|
Unloading | Seller | Buyer | Buyer |
Import clearance and duty | Buyer | Buyer | Seller |
Risk passes | After unloading, at the buyer's disposal | On the arriving vehicle, ready for unloading | Import-cleared, ready for unloading |
Insurance the rule requires | None | None | None |
DPU is the only Incoterms 2020 rule that requires the seller to unload.5 That point is why DPU suits a first-time buyer with no unloading crew, and why it fails a buyer whose own crew is already paid for. DDP adds import clearance and duty to the seller's side, and it is an any-mode rule like DPU and DAP.3 CIF belongs in the same comparison only for a sea shipment. CIF is one of the four sea-only rules, risk passes on board at origin while the seller pays freight and minimum Clause (C) insurance to the destination port, and CIF never includes import duty or clearance.7 Read the CIF cost, insurance and freight guide if a seller-insured sea leg is the alternative you are weighing against DPU.
How a first DPU order runs, from quotation to goods on the ground
Agree the named place in full. Write "DPU, [named place], Incoterms 2020" with the address, bay or gate, and unloading point. Define the place precisely, agree access and the time slot, and state who provides the equipment.8 6 If goods are damaged during seller-performed unloading, the seller bears the loss.8
The seller exports and carries. The seller completes export formalities and any transit customs procedures, arranges and pays for carriage, including unloading, and provides the commercial invoice, packing list, and transport document.1 5
The buyer prepares import clearance while the goods travel. Instruct the broker, settle the classification, and obtain the duty and tax estimate, so clearance can start on arrival.
The seller unloads at the named place. Delivery happens when the goods are unloaded and placed at the buyer's disposal, after notice enabling the buyer to collect them.1 Risk passes at that moment, not on arrival of the vehicle and not when clearance finishes.
The buyer takes delivery and moves the goods onward. The buyer takes delivery, completes import formalities, pays duty and taxes, and arranges onward transport.1 4 Extra costs after delivery are the buyer's, and the contract should state what happens if clearance runs late.6 4

What a DPU price shows, what it hides, and what no quotation can fix
A DPU price fixes who pays, not how much. The seller's price includes export duties, freight charges, and loading and unloading at the designated point, while the buyer pays import clearance, duties and taxes, and last-mile delivery and warehousing after unloading.4 The DPU price guide gives the full cost breakdown. The illustration below shows the shape of the total only. Example figures.
Price line | Example figure (USD) |
|---|---|
Goods, bamboo serving boards, including export packing | 2,850 |
Export clearance and documents | 120 |
Carriage to the named place | 890 |
Unloading at the named place | 110 |
DPU price to the named place | 3,970 |
Import clearance and broker | 130 |
Duty and taxes, example lump sum | 410 |
Onward transport from the named place | 90 |
Post-unloading total | 630 |
Landed total in this example | 4,600 |
The arithmetic is 2,850 + 120 + 890 + 110 = 3,970, and 130 + 410 + 90 = 630, and 3,970 + 630 = 4,600. No duty rate is stated. Compare quotations only on the same named place, specification, and quantity, with the same post-unloading lines added to each.
DPU sets no transit time and no typical cost. Agree the shipment date or period, the unloading window, and who pays delay charges if clearance runs late, and price the timeline from the carrier quotation and the broker, not from a rule.
Documents that travel with a first DPU order
The seller provides the commercial invoice, packing list, and transport document, such as a bill of lading or air waybill, and gives notice when the goods are unloaded and at the buyer's disposal.5 The transport document should be marked with the term, the named place, and the edition, for example "DPU, [named place], Incoterms 2020".8 The buyer should hold the import declaration inputs, the classification, any certificates demanded by the buyer's market, and the broker instruction before the goods move.5 Agree insurance in writing: the holder, the window, the insured value, and the claim route.5
Bangladesh points to settle before you sign
Containers from Bangladesh are usually handed to the carrier at a yard, depot, or terminal before loading on board, so FCA, and for seller-paid carriage CPT or CIP, often match the real handover better than FOB, CFR, or CIF.3 The DPU named place abroad must therefore be precise, and the seller's carrier must be able to unload at that exact point. Confirm the carrier, the equipment, and the access in writing before signing.1 5
For air freight from Dhaka, use only the any-mode rules.3 DPU is an any-mode rule, but the unloading point at an airport is a terminal bay with its own access and handling rules, and the import file must be ready before the seller can unload.1 5 Name the cargo terminal, the bay, and the handler. Agree what happens if import clearance is delayed under DPU, and double-check every document before shipment so a missing form does not leave unloaded goods waiting.3 4
Quotation lines that should stop a first order
A city, a port, or a country as the named place. Risk and cost pass at the named place, so state the address, bay, or gate in the contract.6 5
A DPU price presented as a landed or duty-paid price. DPU excludes import clearance, duty, and taxes.4 Budget the post-unloading lines before ranking quotations.
Insurance assumed, not agreed. DPU does not require either party to insure the goods, so agree the holder, window, and value in the contract.5 6
Unloading equipment, access, or a time slot left unstated. Specify the gear, site readiness, and notice, and agree who pays if the site is not ready.5 8
The edition left out. Write "DPU (named place), Incoterms 2020" in full. A bare "DPU" leaves the unloading duty open to argument.3
Local regulations treated as an afterthought. Overlooking customs requirements and local rules can cause delays and added charges, so check them with the broker before the goods move.6
A change of place agreed by one side only. Any change to the delivery location must be made by mutual agreement and formalized as a written amendment.6
Before you say yes: a first-order check
Answer every line before signing.
The named place is written in full, with the bay or gate, access, hours, and a time slot.
The seller has confirmed, in writing, that its carrier can unload at that exact place with the equipment the goods need.
A broker is appointed, the classification is settled, and a duty and tax estimate exists for the exact goods.
Funds for duty, taxes, clearance, and onward transport are set aside, separate from the DPU price.
Insurance is agreed in writing: who insures the journey, who insures after unloading, the insured value, and the claim route.
The seller price is broken into goods, export clearance and documents, carriage, and unloading.
The shipment date or period, the unloading window, and the delay position if clearance runs late are in the contract.
The invoice, packing list, and transport document name the same unloading point, goods, and term as the contract.
If every line is yes, DPU is a sound choice for a first order. If a line is no, fix it, price it, or change the rule.
What should I know first about DPU?
Know the split: the seller pays carriage and bears cost and risk through unloading at a precisely named place, and the buyer then takes delivery, clears import customs, pays duty and taxes, and moves the goods onward.1 4 DPU is the only Incoterms 2020 rule that requires the seller to unload, it applies to any mode of transport, and it imposes no insurance duty on either side.5 4
What are the typical costs and timelines?
DPU sets no typical cost and no timeline. The seller pays export clearance, carriage, and unloading to the named place, and the buyer pays import clearance, duty and taxes, and onward transport.4 Agree the shipment date or period and the named place in the contract, prepare the import declaration while the goods travel, and compare quotations only on the same named place and specification.
Which documents are needed?
The seller provides the commercial invoice, packing list, and transport document, such as a bill of lading or air waybill, and gives notice when the goods are unloaded and at the buyer's disposal.1 5 The transport document should carry the term, the named place, and the edition.8 The buyer holds the import declaration inputs, the classification, any certificates demanded by the buyer's market, and the broker instruction.5
What are the most common mistakes?
Accepting a city name as the named place, treating a DPU price as duty-paid, assuming insurance is included or that the seller clears import, and comparing a DPU headline price with a price written on another rule. Read the named place first, then the unloading arrangement, then the insurance line, then the post-unloading costs. A change to the place after signing needs mutual agreement and a written amendment.6
