Shipping DAP From Bangladesh: How It Works, Costs and Pitfalls
Under DAP, the seller carries a shipment from Bangladesh to a named place in the buyer's country, ready for unloading. This guide follows the journey from Chattogram, Mongla or Dhaka airport, sets out the cost structure and documents, and names the pitfalls that catch buyers out.
Short answer
Under DAP (Delivered at Place), Incoterms 2020, the seller delivers goods from Bangladesh to a named place in the buyer's country, ready for unloading, bearing the cost and risk of carriage and completing export clearance. The buyer unloads, clears import customs and pays duty and taxes. DAP imposes no insurance obligation on either side, and it works for sea, air and combined transport.

Key takeaways
Under DAP, the seller bears the cost and risk of carriage to the named place, delivering the goods ready for unloading; the buyer unloads, clears import customs and pays duty and taxes.
The named place, written in full with the dock or gate, fixes where the seller's carriage, cost and risk end; a city name alone does not.
Export clearance stays with the seller, including an approved Bill of Export before loading or stuffing under section 131 of the Customs Act, 1969.
DAP imposes no insurance obligation on either side, so agree cover in writing and show the premium as its own line.
Brief the destination broker and forwarder before departure, and book unloading for the arrival window, because risk passes on arrival, ready for unloading.
A DAP quotation from a Bangladeshi supplier can read like a delivered price. It is not. Under DAP, the seller carries the goods, the cost and the risk from Bangladesh to a named place in your country, but the journey ends at that place, on the arriving vehicle, ready for unloading. Import clearance, duty, taxes and unloading are still yours.
This guide follows one DAP shipment in order, from the factory gate to the named place. It is for buyers in the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union and the United Arab Emirates.
DAP from Bangladesh in one journey
DAP stands for Delivered at Place. It is one of the 11 Incoterms 2020 rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce, which allocate cost, risk and obligations between seller and buyer, with all costs for a rule collected in article A9/B9 of that rule.1 Under DAP, the seller delivers the goods by making them available to the buyer, ready for unloading from the arriving means of transport, at the agreed place of destination.2 The seller arranges and pays for transport, bears the risk throughout the journey, completes export formalities, and the buyer completes import formalities.2 DAP works for any mode of transport, or a combination of modes.2
The named place is the whole bargain. State it explicitly, with the full address and the dock or gate, because it fixes where the seller's carriage, cost and risk end.3 A city name alone does not fix that point: the named place can be a warehouse, a distribution centre, a forwarder's depot, or a terminal.3 Write the rule, the named place and the edition together, in the form "DAP (named place), Incoterms 2020".
Delivery happens before unloading: the single difference from DPU, under which the seller does unload.1 Confirm in writing whether the unloading cost is in the seller's transport contract; the unloading risk stays with the buyer either way.2
The three departure gates: Chattogram, Mongla and Dhaka airport
Most sea shipments leave through Chattogram. The Port of Chittagong, now Chattogram, is the main seaport of Bangladesh, on the banks of the Karnaphuli River, and handles over 70 percent of the country's export-import trade.4 It has 19 berths, including 14 container berths, and four container terminals inside the port, with private off-docks nearby.4 Confirm which terminal or off-dock a quotation assumes, and where the goods will be stuffed.
Mongla is the second seaport. The Port of Mongla, on the Pashur River about 48 km south of Khulna city, is the second largest and busiest seaport of Bangladesh after Chattogram, with 11 jetties.5 Check the sailing pattern before comparing a Mongla price with a Chattogram price: different departure ports mean different feeder connections, and the DAP price still has to end at the same named place.
Air shipments leave through Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, where export cargo is screened before departure. Bangladesh first achieved EU aviation security validated regulated agent (RA3) validation at the airport in 2017, allowing direct export cargo shipments to the European Union and the United Kingdom.6 Approval for direct screening of UK-bound export cargo using the explosive detection dog method was reinstated in May 2026, which the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh said would reduce delays and re-screening risk.6
Step by step: a DAP shipment from factory gate to named place
At each step, note who holds the risk and which document proves the handover.
Agree the term and the named place in writing. Record the goods, quantity, packing, the named place in full, the Incoterms 2020 edition, currency and validity, and who unloads and who arranges insurance. State the departure gate too.
Prepare and clear the goods for export. The seller packs the goods and completes export clearance. Under section 131 of the Customs Act, 1969, goods must not be loaded or stuffed in containers or a ship for export unless a Bill of Export, also called a Shipping Bill, has been submitted to Customs and approved.7
Stuff, load and depart. Once the Bill of Export is approved, the goods are loaded, and export is complete once the vessel, truck or aircraft leaves the port, with the customs officer signing the shipping bill as shipped on board.7 Where goods are stuffed at an inland container depot, a gate division officer may check them before they proceed to the port area.7
Main carriage to the destination country. The seller contracts the carrier, pays for carriage to the named place, and bears the risk for the whole journey.2 The seller must also provide the transport documents and security-related information the contract requires, and give notice that lets the buyer take delivery.2 Agree the arrival-notice method, contact and timing before departure.
Handover to the broker and forwarder at destination. The broker needs the commercial invoice, packing list and transport document before arrival, with classification and the duty estimate worked out. The forwarder running the final leg needs the same notice and the named place in full.
Final leg and arrival, ready for unloading. Delivery happens when the goods are placed at the buyer's disposal, ready for unloading, and risk passes to the buyer at that point.2 The buyer unloads, clears import customs, pays duty and taxes, and arranges onward transport.2 Book the dock and labour before arrival: the risk clock starts at arrival.

What the DAP price pays for, and what it leaves to the buyer
The seller's cost lines are freight for the main carriage, inland transport to the named place, export formalities and documentation, and any cargo cover the seller buys for its own risk.3 The buyer covers import duties and taxes, customs clearance fees and unloading labour.3 Destination charges outside the carriage arrangement, storage and onward carriage beyond the named place sit outside the DAP price unless stated otherwise.
Insurance is the gap in the middle. Only CIF and CIP oblige the seller to buy insurance for the buyer, at different levels of cover; under every other rule, including DAP, the seller has no insurance obligation, and the buyer should arrange cover itself or agree in the contract that the seller will add it.8 Bearing transit risk is not holding a policy that pays the buyer. Agree who buys cover, for which legs, and at what price, before shipment, and show the premium as its own line.
Example figures only, for one shipment of jute shopping bags from Chattogram to a buyer's warehouse in Manchester, quoted DAP the warehouse, Incoterms 2020. They are not a quotation or a market price.
Element of the DAP price | Example figure (USD) |
|---|---|
Goods, including export packing | 9,750 |
Export clearance and documents | 340 |
Ocean carriage, Chattogram to UK port | 1,420 |
Onward carriage to the warehouse | 480 |
DAP price to the warehouse | 11,990 |
Buyer-side cost | Example figure (USD) |
|---|---|
Import clearance and broker | 275 |
Duty and taxes, example lump sum | 815 |
Unloading at the warehouse | 165 |
Buyer-side total | 1,255 |
Landed total at the warehouse | 13,245 |
The duty line is an example lump sum only: duty depends on the classification of the exact goods and the rules of the destination country, so ask the broker for a calculation before ranking quotations. Compare DAP price against DAP price for the same named place, specification and quantity. The DAP quotation guide sets out the comparison method, and the risk transfer guide marks the arrival moment when risk moves.
Documents that travel with a DAP shipment
Keep the seller's export file and the buyer's import file under one order number, and send the broker's set before departure.
Document | Who provides it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
Commercial invoice | Seller | Description and value, signed by the exporter7 |
Packing list | Seller | Quantity, weight and packing information7 |
Bill of Export / Shipping Bill | Seller, approved by Customs | No loading or stuffing before approval7 |
EXP form | Seller, certified by an authorised dealer | Ensures realisation of export proceeds7 |
Certificate of origin | Seller, issued by EPB or a chamber | Origin evidence for the Bill of Export7 |
Transport document | Carrier, via the seller | Proof of carriage and delivery2 |
Import declaration and classification | Buyer and broker | Import clearance and release |
Insurance document, if agreed | Whoever buys the cover | Proof of cover for the legs agreed, shown as its own line |
The enclosure list also includes the export letter of credit or, where there is none, the export contract, purchase order or export guarantee approved by the negotiating bank, plus the VAT certificate and taxpayer identification number.7 Product-specific papers sit on top of that list, such as an export registration certificate for jute goods and a phytosanitary certificate for agricultural goods.7 Check the product-specific list before packing.
Timelines: what to ask for instead of a single transit number
DAP fixes where delivery happens, not how many days carriage takes, so this guide states no transit time as fact. Ask each supplier for an arrival window tied to the named place, the arrival-notice method, and what happens if the buyer cannot unload on arrival. Compare windows only when they end at the same named place, and build the timeline backwards: export clearance must come before loading.7
Bangladesh rules and handover tips
No separate Bangladesh rule changes the DAP split.2 Confirm the seller's export-clearance scope in writing, whether carriage ends at the warehouse or an earlier terminal, and that the Bill of Export is approved before sealing. Brief the broker and forwarder before departure, with the named place, arrival window and document set.
Pitfalls specific to Bangladesh-origin DAP shipments
Loading before the Bill of Export is approved. Goods must not be loaded or stuffed for export unless the Bill of Export has been submitted and approved.7 A container sealed early still has to wait.
A named place that is really a terminal. "DAP Manchester" or a port name is not a named place. If carriage ends at a terminal, the final leg and storage are unpriced. Write the warehouse address and the dock or gate, and confirm the carriage ends there.3
A broker who first hears of the shipment at arrival. Import clearance and the duty estimate cannot start from a vehicle at the gate. Send the document set and arrival window to the broker before departure, and confirm the arrival-notice contact in writing.
Unloading assumed, never booked. Under DAP the seller does not unload, and the buyer bears the risk from arrival, ready for unloading.2 Book labour and equipment for the arrival window, and confirm whether the carriage contract includes the unloading charge; the buyer still bears the risk during unloading.2
Insurance read into a price that carries none. DAP imposes no insurance obligation on either party, and only CIF and CIP oblige the seller to insure for the buyer.8 Agree cover in writing, with the premium shown separately.
A DAP price ranked against a CIF port price. CIF ends at the destination port, with risk passing on board at origin, while DAP ends at the named place, with risk passing on arrival.8 Price every quotation to the same point before ranking. The CIF guide and the CIP shipping guide show the contrast with port-based and first-carrier-handover rules.
Destination charges treated as included because they were not mentioned. Ask which terminal, handling, storage and onward charges the carriage arrangement includes.

What should I know first about DAP?
DAP stands for Delivered at Place. Under Incoterms 2020, the seller delivers the goods at a named place of destination, placed at the buyer's disposal on the arriving means of transport, ready for unloading, and bears the cost and risk of carriage to that place.2 The buyer unloads, clears import customs and pays duty and taxes, and no insurance obligation applies to either party unless cover is agreed separately.8 DAP works for any mode of transport, including sea, air and combinations of modes.2 Fix the named place in full first.
What do DAP costs and timelines look like from Bangladesh?
There is no typical DAP cost or transit time that holds across suppliers, routes, modes and quantities, so no figure is stated here as fact. A DAP price covers the goods, export clearance and carriage to the named place, including inland transport to that place.3 The buyer pays import clearance, duty and taxes, broker fees and unloading, plus any destination charges outside the carriage arrangement.3 Ask for an arrival window tied to the named place and the arrival-notice method.
Which documents are needed for a DAP shipment from Bangladesh?
The seller provides the commercial invoice, packing list, transport document and the export file, headed by the Bill of Export approved by Customs under section 131 of the Customs Act, 1969, with the export contract or letter of credit, EXP form, certificate of origin, VAT certificate and taxpayer identification number enclosed.7 Product-specific certificates are added where the product or destination requires them.7 The buyer and broker provide the import declaration, classification and compliance file at destination. Send the broker's set before departure, and keep every document under one order number.
What mistakes do buyers make most often on DAP shipments?
The most common mistakes are treating a DAP price as duty-paid, accepting a city or terminal as the named place, assuming the seller unloads, assuming insurance is included, and ranking a DAP headline price against a CIF or FOB headline price that ends at a different point. Each mistake comes from reading the headline price as a delivered, all-in total. Read the named place first, then the cost lines, then the buyer-side remainder.
Next steps on Exportain
Read the Incoterms guide and the DAP quotation guide before ranking quotations on the same named place. When the named place, specification and departure gate are fixed, post an RFQ on Exportain, and check how to buy for the buying steps. Exportain is a B2B marketplace where buyers post RFQs, receive quotations and message suppliers. It is not a party to the contract for the goods, and it does not inspect goods, book freight or clear customs.
