Short answer

A custom knitted underwear manufacturer in Bangladesh makes briefs, panties and similar styles to your tech pack under an OEM process: specification, itemized quotation, proto and pre-production samples, bulk production, inspection and export filing. Compare factories on the same specification and delivery term, approve samples in writing, and treat MOQ and price as structured per style and per color, not as single headline figures.

Key takeaways

  • A custom order is made to your tech pack: fabric, elastic, gusset, measurements, labels and packing in the tech pack are what bulk production repeats.

  • Knitted underwear sits under HS headings 6107 for men and boys and 6108 for women and girls, both knitted or crocheted, in Chapter 61.

  • MOQ is structured per style and per color by fabric and dye lots, elastic and label runs, so state the split per style, color and size in your enquiry.

  • Cost drivers are fabric, elastic and trims, making, label and carton runs, finishing and packing, priced against one Incoterm for every quotation.

  • Exportain verification is a document and photo review, not a factory inspection, and a badge is not a guarantee of capacity, quality or delivery.

Ordering custom knitted underwear from a manufacturer in Bangladesh is different from buying a stock style. A custom manufacturer works to your specification under an OEM process: your fabric, your construction, your waistband elastic and branding, and your labels and packing. This guide covers the tech pack, sampling and approval, and how cost and minimum order quantity (MOQ) are structured, from tech pack to bulk.

Knitted underwear is knitwear. The Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), established in 1996, is the apex trade body for the knitwear sector and represents approximately 2,540 knitwear member factories.1 In the Harmonized System, heading 6107 covers underpants, briefs and similar articles for men or boys, knitted or crocheted,2 and heading 6108 covers briefs, panties and similar articles for women or girls, knitted or crocheted.3 If you sell into the European Union, Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 states that a textile product shall be labelled or marked with the name and percentage by weight of all constituent fibres in descending order.4 Record the heading and the exact label wording in the tech pack before you ask for prices.

Why this matters for buyers and sellers

A custom order repeats whatever the tech pack says, in every unit. If the waistband elastic width, the gusset construction or the size grading is wrong on paper, bulk repeats the error at full quantity. Caught on the pre-production sample, the same point costs one sample round.

For the buyer, choosing on specification rather than on a headline price decides fit, comfort and label accuracy in the finished stock. For the seller, a complete tech pack allows an accurate quotation, with a minimum stated for that exact style instead of for a generic brief. Fabric dyed for your color, elastic printed with your name and labels woven with your brand cannot be sold to another buyer, so the factory protects that work in the minimum.

Two controls keep the order grounded. The first is an inspection plan agreed before production. ISO 2859-1 defines a system of acceptance sampling plans for inspection by attributes, indexed by acceptance quality limit (AQL) for lot-by-lot inspection.5 AQL is the maximum average percentage of defective items considered acceptable during random sampling.5 The second is one delivery term for every quotation: the Incoterms 2020 rules set out 11 rules with a clear allocation of cost, risk and obligations.6

If you do not need custom work, the wholesale knitted underwear guide covers stock styles instead.

What should I know first about knitted underwear?

Three points shape a custom underwear order before you contact any factory.

The minimum is per style and per color, not only per order. A style change means a new pattern and new markers, and a color change means a new dye lot, elastic set and cutting run. A large total can still fail if one color is too small to dye or cut alone, so state the quantity per style, per color and per size in your enquiry.

Fabric, elastic and labels set the floor. Underwear fabric is knitted and dyed in lots, and a dyed-to-order color carries the lot minimum with it. Waistband elastic is bought or woven per design, and a printed or woven brand name on the elastic is its own run. Labels, hang tags and printed cartons are also ordered in separate runs, each with its own minimum. A private-label order can meet the garment minimum and still fall below the elastic or label run.

The tech pack is the contract for construction. A photograph shows a style. A tech pack states the specification that bulk repeats.

Section

State in the tech pack

Fabric

Composition, construction, weight, finish, color per style, stocked or dyed to order

Body construction

Brief, panty, boxer brief or trunk; gusset type and lining; leg elastic or binding; seams

Elastic and trims

Waistband width, material and stretch; printed or woven branding; lace or binding where used

Measurements

Chart for every size: waist relaxed and stretched, rise, leg opening, gusset length

Labels and branding

Fibre and care wording per destination, size labels, woven labels, hang tags

Packing

Folding, polybag or card, pieces per pack, size and color ratio per carton, carton marks

Example figures: one brief style split across four colors at a small quantity per color, with printed waistband elastic in each color. Example figures: the same total restated as two colors only, with plain stock elastic. The second version removes two dye lots and the printed elastic run, so it can clear the minimums at the same total. The example shows structure only, not a typical MOQ, price or lead time. See the knitted underwear MOQ guide and the HS code for knitted underwear guide.

Step-by-step: how it works

  1. Send one tech pack to every candidate. Send the identical file to each factory, or the quotations describe different garments and cannot be compared.

  2. Ask each factory what it makes itself. Ask which stages sit in its own factory: knitting or fabric sourcing, dyeing, cutting, sewing, elastic work and finishing. Record whether you are contracting with a manufacturer or a trading company.

  3. Compare itemized quotations on one delivery term. Ask for fabric, making, elastic, trims, labels and packing priced apart, with the MOQ per style and per color and set-up costs apart from the unit price. Compare only replies on the same Incoterm.6

  4. Order a proto sample, then correct it in writing. The first sample checks style, fit and construction, often in a fabric close to your specification. Measure it, check waistband stretch and recovery, wash it, and return corrections in writing.

  5. Approve the pre-production sample in writing. This sample uses your actual fabric, color, elastic, labels and packing. Check fibre and care wording, elastic branding and measurements against the tech pack, approve in writing, and keep a sealed reference sample.

  6. Confirm fabric, elastic and labels before cutting. After approval, the factory books fabric and orders elastic and labels for your order. Confirm in writing that they match the approved sample before cutting, and agree the inspection window.

  7. Inspect bulk against the approved sample, then file for export. Inspect the finished goods under the sampling plan in your purchase order, following ISO 2859-1,5 then confirm cartons, packing list and export filing agree with the order.

The knitted underwear quality control checklist gives the garment-level check points.

Costs, timelines and documents

What are the typical costs and timelines?

There are no typical costs or timelines a guide can state as fact for a custom order. Each factory prices your fabric, construction, elastic and trim runs, label and carton runs, finishing and packing, and the delivery term you choose.6

The cost drivers to ask about line by line are fabric and dyeing, cutting and making, waistband elastic in stock or custom form, labels, tags and cartons as separate runs, and set-up work such as printed elastic or woven label designs. Ask for set-up costs apart from the unit price, so the same set-up serves the repeat order. The knitted underwear price guide explains how these drivers combine in a quotation.

For timelines, ask for the schedule as separate lines: proto sample, pre-production sample, fabric ready, elastic and labels ready, cutting, sewing, finishing and inspection. Sampling depends on fabric availability and correction rounds, and bulk on dyeing and line capacity.

Which documents are needed?

The documents fall into three groups.

Group

Documents

What you check

Order documents

Tech pack, itemized quotation, purchase order

Specification, price, MOQ per style and per color, lead time, Incoterm and payment terms agree

Production documents

Written sample approvals, fabric, elastic and label confirmations, inspection report

Approvals written and dated; report judged against the approved pre-production sample

Export documents

Commercial invoice, packing list, EXP form, certificate of origin, Bill of Export

Description, quantity and value match the purchase order

For export clearance in Bangladesh, goods may not be loaded unless an export declaration, the Bill of Export or Shipping Bill, is submitted to Customs and approved.7 Enclosed documents include the export contract or purchase order where there is no export letter of credit, the commercial invoice, the packing list, the EXP form certified by an authorized dealer, and a certificate of origin issued by the EPB or a Chamber of Commerce and Industry.7

Bangladesh-specific rules and tips

Confirm association claims at the source. Knitted underwear sits in the knitwear sector, so BKMEA is the sector association for this product.1 If a supplier claims BKMEA membership, confirm it with the association itself. Membership signals an active knitwear business, not the MOQ on offer or capacity for your order. BKMEA also states that it addresses environmental and labour standard issues in its member factories.1

Keep one legal name across every paper. The export declaration names the exporter and the foreign buyer,7 so the name on the trade licence, quotation, proforma invoice and payment account should match.

Ask which inputs are bought in for your order. Waistband elastic, lace and some yarns may be bought in for your specification, and a bought-in elastic can set both the minimum and the earliest production date. Agree the size ratio per color before production.

Separate the factory from the trading company on paper. Record which company name appears on the export documents and which facility your goods are made in. The name on the Bill of Export is the exporter of record.7

Mistakes and red flags

What are the most common mistakes?

Sending a photo instead of a tech pack. Without fabric weight, elastic width, gusset construction, measurements and label wording in writing, each factory quotes a different garment.

Asking for a total MOQ only. The binding minimum is usually per color, per elastic run or per label run. An order can clear the total and still fall below the per-color minimum.

Choosing on the unit price alone. A price that excludes elastic, labels or packing is not lower, it is incomplete. Compare only itemized quotations on the same Incoterm.6

Approving the sample verbally. If the approval or the corrections are not in writing, there is no standard to inspect bulk against. Elastic stretch, gusset position and label wording drift without a written record.

Changing fabric, color or elastic after pre-production approval. After approval, fabric is dyed and elastic and labels are ordered for your specification. A change restarts sampling and can restart those orders.

Treating a profile or a badge as verification. A profile is a starting point for enquiries. It does not test whether a factory can make your brief, and a badge is not a guarantee of capacity, quality or delivery.8

Skipping the inspection. Sampling under ISO 2859-1 checks a lot against an agreed AQL,5 the last control before the goods become your stock.

Checklist

Before you confirm, every line should be answered in writing.

  • Tech pack sent: fabric, construction, gusset, elastic, measurements, labels, sizes, packing.

  • Indicative HS heading recorded: 6107 for men and boys,2 6108 for women and girls,3 with the full destination code confirmed.

  • Fibre and care label wording set per destination, with EU wording following Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 where the EU is the destination.4

  • Split stated per style, color and size, with one size ratio per color.

  • MOQ confirmed per style and per color; elastic, label, tag and carton minimums apart from the garment MOQ; binding line named.

  • Set-up costs itemized apart from the unit price; paid set-ups recorded.

  • Proto sample corrected in writing; pre-production sample in the actual fabric, elastic and labels approved in writing.

  • Inspection level and AQL values in the purchase order.5

  • Quotations compared on the same specification and Incoterm.6

  • Export set agreed: invoice, packing list, EXP form, certificate of origin, Bill of Export.7

How Exportain helps

On Exportain, browse suppliers and post a request for quotation (RFQ) on the RFQ board with your tech pack summary, split per style, color and size, and delivery term, so suppliers quote against the same specification. Ask each reply for its per-style and per-color minimums, with elastic and label minimums apart from the garment MOQ. For branded elastic and own-label packing, the private label knitted underwear guide covers the added runs. When you accept a quotation, Exportain creates one order and issues one proforma invoice from the accepted terms.8

Read the badges for what they record. Exportain Verified means Exportain has checked identity, phone, email and business registration, and Export Verified means it has checked the Export Registration Certificate (ERC).8 Factory Verified means it has reviewed photos of the manufacturer factory, while Trading Company Verified means it has reviewed photos of the trading company office or warehouse.8 Verification is a document review by staff, free, and never granted by membership plans.9 It is not a factory inspection,8 9 so sample approval and inspection stay with you. See how supplier verification works on Exportain.

FAQs

What should I know first about knitted underwear?

Know the structure before the price. A custom order is made to your tech pack, and the minimum is set per style and per color by fabric and dye lots, elastic runs and label runs. Men's and boys' knitted underwear sits under HS heading 6107,2 and women's and girls' knitted briefs and panties under heading 6108.3 Set the fabric, elastic, gusset, measurements and label wording first.

What are the typical costs and timelines?

There are no typical figures a buyer can rely on, because each factory sets its price, MOQ and lead time for your specification. Fabric, construction, elastic, label runs and the delivery term drive the price,6 and sampling rounds, dyeing, elastic delivery and line capacity drive the timeline.

Which documents are needed?

The order documents are the tech pack, itemized quotation and purchase order. The production documents are the written sample approvals, material confirmations and the inspection report. The export set is the Bill of Export, commercial invoice, packing list, EXP form certified by an authorized dealer, and a certificate of origin issued by the EPB or a Chamber of Commerce and Industry.7

What are the most common mistakes?

The most common mistakes are sending a photo instead of a tech pack, asking only for a total MOQ, choosing on an incomplete unit price, approving samples verbally, changing the specification after approval, and reading a badge as a guarantee. A badge is not a guarantee of capacity, quality or delivery.8
