Key takeaways
Agree the sample, size chart, tolerances, moisture limit, test methods and acceptance numbers before inspection, and draw the sample at random across sizes, colours and cartons.
Judge a basket by its woven body first: measure top and base diameter and height, check weave tension and gaps, and test handles and shape under the pack load.
Check moisture and mould carton by carton with a calibrated meter against the agreed limit, and never pack a damp basket to meet a loading date.
Check nesting and packing as part of quality, not after it: baskets must nest without forcing and without crushing the rim or handles of the basket below.

A basket is judged by how it holds its shape in use and in the carton. A rim that flexes out of round, a handle that pulls loose, a weave gap that widens under load, or mould that appears during a sea voyage all show up after the buyer has paid. This checklist is written for baskets, not for bamboo furniture: it starts with the woven body, rim and handles, and ends with nesting and packing.
Why this checklist matters
Baskets concentrate risk in a woven, hollow product: the weave carries the load, the rim holds the shape, and the base decides whether the basket sits level and stacks. Uneven strip tension, easy to miss on one basket, shows across a set when baskets are nested, loaded and lifted by their handles.
A written checklist removes interpretation. Each point is checked against the approved sample, size chart and packing specification, and recorded as pass, fail or not applicable. Agree the sampling plan and acceptance numbers per defect class in advance. ISO 2859-1 defines a system of acceptance sampling plans for inspection by attributes, so a lot can be assessed from a sample instead of checking every unit.1
For the EU market, safety matters as well as appearance. Under Regulation (EU) 2023/988, economic operators will place or make available on the market only safe products, and safety is assessed on characteristics such as design, composition, presentation, labelling and consumer categories.2 Check splinters, sharp edges and handle strength as safety points, not only as cosmetic points.
Before you start
Do not begin until the references are complete: an approved sample per style, size and colour, the purchase order and packing specification, the size chart with tolerances for top diameter, base diameter and height, the weave and finish specification, and the label plan. Draw the sample at random across sizes, colours and cartons.
Bring a tape measure, a straightedge, a calibrated bamboo moisture meter, a scale for load checks, and a camera. In basket production, weaving supervision checks consistent tension, even patterns and tight knots, and defects such as loose knots, uneven patterns and gaps are corrected during production.3

Basket shape and measurements
Measure top diameter at two points at right angles on each sampled basket, and record both values: a basket can measure correctly one way and be oval the other.
Measure base diameter and height, with the basket standing on a flat surface and the rim unpressed, against the size chart tolerance.
Check that the basket sits level without rocking, and that the base weave lies flat, with no raised centre or collapsed corner.
For sets, measure each size separately, and confirm the sizes nest in the order named in the pack, without forcing.
Weave and structure
Check weave tension by hand all round the body: strips must sit evenly, with no slack section bellied out and no tight section pulling the wall in.
Check for gaps, missing strips, broken strips and loose strip ends, on the wall, base and rim, against the sample.
Check the base weave from underneath: the centre must be closed and even, with no hole, loose crossing or strip end poking through.
Check pattern and colour sequence against the sample, including dyed or natural-tone bands, so a band does not start at a different row on different baskets.
Rim, edge and surface finish
Run a hand slowly around the full rim, inside and out, checking for splinters, sharp strip edges and rough cut ends.
Check the rim binding or wrapping, where specified: it must be tight, even and fully secured, with no loose end or gap at the join.
Check the whole surface, inside and out, for cracks, dents, stains, oil marks and discoloration, against the sample.
Check the finish named in the pack, such as natural, oiled or lacquered, for even coverage, with no missed patch, run or sticky area.
Check colour across sampled baskets under the same light, and separate natural bamboo variation, shown by the sample, from a dye or finish change, which it does not show.
Handles, lids and liners
Check each handle for secure attachment at both ends, with no loose lashing, unwrapped end or fixing that moves when pulled.
Lift each sampled basket by its handles at the pack load, and check that handles stay attached, the rim does not distort, and the basket does not twist. Basket makers test weight capacity and handle strength on storage and heavy-duty baskets.3
Where a lid is specified, check that it fits its rim, sits level, and lifts off and replaces without forcing or catching.
Where a liner is specified, check that it fits without bunching and is secured as the pack directs, with no loose stitching or raw edge showing.
Moisture, mould and pests
Take moisture readings with the calibrated meter on baskets from different cartons, against the moisture limit agreed in the purchase order, not a figure from another order.
Check readings for consistency across the sample: high readings clustered in one carton point to a storage or packing problem for that carton.
Inspect inside the weave, under the rim and inside the base for mould spots, dark staining and musty odour. Finished bamboo and wooden products are checked before packing for cracks, mould, insect holes, burrs, splinters, stains, deformation and discoloration, and defective pieces are removed.4
Check for insect holes, fine bore dust and frass in the weave and rim, and segregate any affected basket for a separate decision.
Function, nesting and stacking
Load a sampled basket to the pack load, carry it by its handles, set it down, and check that the base stays flat and the wall keeps its shape. Example figures: if the pack names 5 kg, the check uses 5 kg.
Nest sampled sets and check that each basket seats fully without forcing, without crushing the rim of the basket below it.
Labels, claims and packing
Check that labels carry the material, size, care and origin information the destination market and purchase order require, legibly and correctly placed.
Check any material or finish claim on the label or pack against the evidence agreed, and record an unsupported claim as a failure.
Check nesting inside the carton: baskets must nest as the pack directs, with separators or wrapping where specified, so rims and handles are not crushed.
Check carton contents against the packing list: style, size, colour, quantity and set composition per carton.
Weigh and measure sample cartons, and check markings and carton count against the packing list. Bamboo basket cartons are packed with protective padding and labelled with product descriptions, care instructions and handling symbols.3
Common failures and how to fix them
The most frequent failure is a basket that measures correctly empty but loses its shape under load, usually because weave tension is uneven or the rim binding is loose. Stop, load a sampled basket to the pack load, and compare weave and rim against the sample before packing restarts. Next is mould found after packing, which traces to baskets packed while still damp: re-check moisture readings carton by carton and segregate affected cartons.
Loose handles usually trace to lashing finished in a hurry: re-lash a test basket and check it under load before the rest are finished. Weave gaps clustered on one side of many baskets point to one weaver or one strip batch: segregate those baskets and re-inspect them as a group. Colour change across a lot usually traces to more than one finish batch: re-sort complete sets before packing.
Above the agreed acceptance level, options are re-inspection, documented partial acceptance, or rejection.

How Exportain helps
Exportain is a B2B marketplace connecting buyers with Bangladeshi suppliers of bamboo baskets and handicrafts, so basket sizes, weave, finish, moisture limit and packing can be agreed at the enquiry stage. Browse suppliers, read the handicrafts sourcing guide and use inspection services when you plan the check. Supplier profiles show which document and photo checks have been recorded, not factory inspections. Exportain is not a party to the goods contract and does not inspect goods, book freight or clear customs.
FAQs
When should this checklist be used?
Use it at final inspection, when baskets are finished, dry and packed. For larger and first orders, also use it during production, while weave, rim and handles can still be corrected.
Who should complete it?
The buyer, a local agent or an independent inspector can complete it, using the approved sample, size chart and a randomly drawn sample.
What are the most common failures?
Uneven weave tension, loose handles, baskets that lose shape under load, mould from damp packing, and crushed rims from poor nesting are the failures found most often.
Can a third party do it?
Yes, if you share the approved sample, size chart, tolerances, moisture limit and acceptance levels first.
